HOLOWACH HISTORY

Alexander Holowach graduated from Holcomb High School in 1938. He moved to California and graduated from the Downey School of Electronics. An extended length of Alex’s working career as a test technician was with Hughes Aircraft Company from which he retired.

Alex realized the value of his education and the impact of his educational accomplishments. In his gratitude, Alex bequeathed $629,070.28 of his estate to the Holcomb school district. The district is deeply appreciative of Alex’s benevolence.

Although Alex did not specify how the money should be spent, The Board of Education decided to use the interest from the fund to provide scholarship money for students who graduated from Holcomb High School. The first scholarships were paid during the 1997-98 school year.

The total amount of scholarships awarded since 1997 - $365,000.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Holowach Scholarship Committee and Holcomb Board of Education are pleased to announce an additional scholarship opportunity for Holcomb High School graduates pursuing a degree in education. Graduates who have completed thirty post-secondary hours from a two or four-year college may apply for the Holowach Education Scholarship. The exact amount of the education scholarship will be determined on a yearly basis and will be awarded to one student each year. The requirements are the same as the Holowach Estate Scholarship although the handwritten essay will cover a different topic.

Students may apply for both the Estate Scholarship and the Education Scholarship; however, they are only eligible to receive one award. Consideration will be given to students willing to return to a teaching job in western Kansas and should be noted on the application.

HOLOWACH ESTATE AND HOLOWACH EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Scholarships will be awarded based on available interest accrued on the Holowach fund and the selection process of a review committee. An application does not assure the awarding of a scholarship. No student will be eligible to receive more than $3,000 during the post-secondary years.

The exact amount of the education scholarship will be determined on a yearly basis and will be awarded to one student per year.

Holcomb High School graduates are encouraged to apply for the Holowach Estate and/or Holowach Education Scholarship. The applicant must have attained at least thirty post-secondary hours from a two year or four-year college or completed a year of trade school. When applying for the education scholarship, a year of trade school is not applicable and will not be considered as college credit toward an education degree. The applicant must have graduated from Holcomb High School within the previous six years. Applications are due August 1st and must be submitted to the USD 363 Administration Office, 305 Wiley, Holcomb, KS. Mailed applications should be addressed, P.O. Box 8. Scholarships will be awarded annually and will be paid in semester installments.

A selection committee will review the applications. The selection committee will be comprised of the high school principal, two instructors, site council member, and the superintendent.

All checks will be made out to the college and to the student and will be mailed to the college.

Requirements for both scholarships:

  1. Holcomb High School graduate within the previous six year period

  2. Attained thirty post-secondary credit hours or verification of one completed year of trade school

LETTER TO SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS

Dear Holowach Scholarship Applicant:

New guidelines/requirements in applying for the Holowach Scholarships and the applications may be found on the district’s web page.

Due to low interest rates and the number of scholarships awarded, interest on the fund has depleted rapidly and new scholarship guidelines have been established. The scholarship amount will be determined by the amount of interest the fund has earned and a review committee will determine the recipients. An application does not assure the awarding of a scholarship. Only one student a year may be awarded the Holowach Education Scholarship.

A deadline of August 1st has been established to have the completed Holowach Scholarship packet submitted to the administration office, 305 Wiley, Holcomb, Kansas. Applications submitted by US mail should be addressed, USD 363 Administration Office, P.O. Box 8, Holcomb, KS 67851.

A transcript and proof of enrollment must be submitted by January 10th before the second semester payment will be sent.

Respectfully,

Holowach Scholarship Committee
